Angel Painting Progression

Here’s the video from the images I took of the process of painting the Angel. I tried to take a picture every time it changed enough to be noticeable to someone other than me. I’ve always been interested in the process of painting, and I think a video like this (although I’ve never actually seen another artist make progression images into a video, I am the first in the history of the world) is the best way to understand an artist’s work. You can see that at the beginning my focus is structural, then gradually it moves toward more detail work. It also becomes apparent that I changed a few areas multiple times, and the whole thing looks like a complete Kiko the monkey mess basically all the way until the end. My friends in college used to make fun of me for this, they said that my paintings in progress would look horrible no matter when you saw them, then on the last day I would salvage it to the point where you could actually tell what it was.

Try to focus on one area and watch it change.

If you can’t tell, it runs forward from the first sketch on canvas to the finished painting where it pauses, then runs backward to the beginning. Repeat.

Fire Door, Wyeth

wyeth

This is one of my favorite paintings by Andrew Wyeth, called Field Hand. Is that not the greatest thing you have ever seen? Everyone has seen Christina’s World and the one with the dog sleeping on the bed, which are both great paintings, but most people haven’t seen much of his other work. He’s incredible. As I write this, I realize that I should make a full post devoted to him, so I will. At a later time.

Here’s a drawing I did the other day:

And this is the current progress of the painting I’m working on, which is going slow because I can’t not watch the Olympics.

McCall, Idaho

Vacation last week for UD’s wedding. Here are a few pictures I took of the good times.

I climbed up big rocks and stuff.

The whole fam got together. Note that our relative heights vary. Apparently we have a few toeheads amongst us, although I definitely wouldn’t know anything about that. A pretty girl took this picture.

I realized after I took these photos that they reminded me an Odd Nerdrum painting (below).
