Founder of Mayan culture, God of the Sky, ruler of Day and Night, Itzamná was one of the most important creator deities in ancient Mayan society. He gave the Mayans language, wisdom, the calendar, scientific and technological ingenuity, and the spirit of creation amidst chaos. One of the forms taken by Itzamná is the Principle Bird Deity, who seems to have been depicted as a Laughing Falcon, as presented in this piece.
